Joya Spa - Scottsdale, USA

Hello from the hottest place under the Arizona sun...literally!

My record-day-temperature-arrival in Phoenix put me in an immediate need for a cocktail with an umbrella and a dip in a cold pool. So, happy was I to be heading straight to the Montelucia! This four year old resort, tucked away at the base of Camelback Mountain is home to the Joya Spa, a Moroccan and Andalusian inspired retreat elegantly designed in what could be described as a sultan‘s harem meets luxurious Spanish casita. Joya has expertly found a way to pair boutique and spa product shopping with the calm feeling that comes when entering a spa. It is made even more elegant by the beautiful round staircase you must ascend in order to start your spa experience. Joya Spa, Scottsdale, AZAll the while, you are accompanied for a tour to the locker area, another experience that makes Joya beyond unique and also appealing to the mystical spa seeker with its simulated starry sky, fifty-pound quartz Zen stone, and blessing pebbles. Once I had entered the locker room for my treatments I took a look around the locker room and was impressed by the quiet feel and impeccable details.

From shower amenities to the iron work of the whirlpool area, the ambiance of Joya is hard to beat. Special to the spa is their ice cold deluge; a five gallon rush of water perfect to stand under before hopping in the clothing optional whirlpool. Shhh...Joya also added a Whisper Room to cap off your water relaxation! This unique room is whispers only upon entering. Enjoy the dim light and pick a daybed to relax on with tea and your robe. A door away in the relaxation lounge, I was then punctually met for my Joya signature orange cranberry body polish. Joya Spa, Scottsdale, AZA rigorous scrub of salts and alluring scents, it left my skin very smooth. However, the back and scalp massage that followed did not leave me with relaxed muscles, but wanting more time and more pressure. My next treatment was the oxygen facial. I was taken to a small, but cozy room. Although my bed was too warm, I was impressed by the knowledge and comfort of my facialist. The highlight was a glycolic mask that felt like a million tiny sparks and left my skin very refreshed.

Ready for some sunshine, I grabbed my swimsuit and a magazine from their extensive collection and headed through the Moroccan-inspired archways to the spa‘s very own private patio and pool for apris treatment lunch and drinks. Although hotter than hot, I got my tan on with some fabulous champagne and then finished off my stay at the spa with a leisurely use of the shower and facilities. With not a single amenity overlooked. Joya knows how to let a woman take her time in the mirror! Leaving Joya was bittersweet, but they make the process relaxing and easy as you transition from bliss to reality. Overall, the atmosphere and interior of Joya Spa is certainly five star quality, but my treatments left me feeling a contrast, therefore I rate Joya at 3.5 stars.

There are two things that you should know when traveling to Colorado Springs. First, jumping into a hot yoga session an hour after arriving and prior to acclimating to the altitude is a poor choice. You will be the class entertainment, guaranteed. Second, your visit to the city will be incomplete without visiting the legacy that is the Broadmoor Hotel.

Valentine's Day at the Petit Spa/Jefferson HotelThe Petit Spa at The Jefferson Hotel, Washington, D.C.

Small things done in great ways are worth making a big deal about.  A prime example is The Petit Spa in Washington, DC.  Tucked away on the second floor of the enchanting Jefferson Hotel in the heart of the city, The Petit Spa is all you’d expect from a luxury boutique establishment, plus everything more.

Connaught Hotel, Big Ben“Ding, dong, ding, dong”. Cheers, Luxus readers!  Big Ben and I send our hearty regards from the marvelous city of London, England.  It’s brilliant to be back here and it’s an honor (or shall I say honour ) to share highlights of my recent London spa trip with you.  This bustling, diverse, and often gray, charmer of a city is a second home to me and I fall more in love with it upon every return.

Providing a relaxation ritual most Westerners would peg between extreme and adventurous, Seattle’s Banya 5 offers an urban spa experience unlike the rest. “I call it ‘proactive relaxation,” says Drew Shelton-Stewart, Director of Operations and Client Services at Banya 5. By proactive, he means clients sitting in a 240 degree oven while flogging each other with oak branches before plunging full-body into an icy 40 degree pool. And for what? For a level of physical and mental exuberance that has them coming back again and again.

Many spas seek to incorporate environmentally friendly aspects in their surroundings, but the Elaia Spa genuinely embraces the entire “green” philosophy. Lodged within the Hyatt at Olive 8, Seattle’s first LEED* certified hotel, the spa is ideally located in the heart of downtown - only walking distance from Pike’s Place Market, the theatre district, and top shopping destinations.

I recently had the pleasure of hitting the Hawaiian island of Oahu for some spa time at one of Waikiki Beach’s most popular hotels, the Hyatt Regency. The in-house Na Ho’ola “two-story, 10,000 square-foot resort spa offers deluxe facilities and a luxurious array of specialty services that evoke the essence of Waikiki Beach.” Their wide range of treatments encompasses full body treatments, massages, and facials. They cater to both men and women, along with offering couples treatments; however this is an adult only spa.

Suntra Spa, Cape Town, South AfricaHere in Cape Town, life is fast-paced yet quaint; British, yet African; and modern, yet hearkens to earlier days. Not to mention it is absolutely beautiful here! During my stay, I’ve had the pleasure of getting to know Cape Town’s newest hotel and spa, the 15 on Orange. Among the modern and sleek floors, complete with gold couches in the lifts, is the seventh floor spa known as Suntra.
